Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Complex Legacyb. 1989
Youngest woman ever elected to Congress (2018), vocal advocate for Puerto Rican rights and decolonization
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (born 1989) is a U.S. Representative from New York of Puerto Rican descent who has used her platform to bring unprecedented attention to Puerto Rico's colonial status in mainstream American politics.
Born in the Bronx to a Puerto Rican father from the South Bronx and a mother born in Puerto Rico, Ocasio-Cortez was elected to Congress in 2018 and quickly became one of the most prominent politicians in the United States. She has:
- Publicly called Puerto Rico's status "colonialism" in congressional hearings
- Advocated for debt relief and an end to the fiscal control board
- Pushed for adequate hurricane relief funding
- Co-sponsored the Puerto Rico Status Act
- Challenged the application of the Jones Act to Puerto Rico
- Visited Puerto Rico to draw attention to post-María conditions
Her willingness to use the word "colonialism" in Congress — where euphemisms like "territory" and "Commonwealth" are standard — has shifted the political discourse. She represents a new generation of diaspora Puerto Ricans who refuse to accept the colonial relationship as normal.
Ocasio-Cortez's political impact on Puerto Rico policy, while significant in raising awareness, also illustrates the colonial paradox: Puerto Rico's most effective advocate in Congress represents the Bronx, not Puerto Rico, because Puerto Ricans on the island cannot elect their own voting representatives.
