Daddy Yankee (Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, born 1977) is a Puerto Rican musician known as the 'King of Reggaetón' whose hit 'Gasolina' (2004) brought reggaetón to global audiences and whose collaboration on 'Despacito' (2017) became the most-viewed video in YouTube history at the time.
Born in the Villa Kennedy public housing project in Río Piedras, Daddy Yankee grew up in the caseríos that incubated reggaetón. As a teenager, he was accidentally shot in the leg — an injury that ended his dream of professional baseball but redirected him toward music.
His career trajectory mirrors reggaetón's journey: from underground mixtapes in the 1990s, to mainstream Spanish-language success in the early 2000s, to global crossover with 'Gasolina' and 'Despacito.' He announced his retirement in 2022 with a farewell tour.
Daddy Yankee's significance extends beyond music: he demonstrated that Puerto Rican artists from marginalized communities could achieve the highest levels of global commercial success — challenging both the island's class hierarchy and the Anglo-centric music industry.
