Eugenio María de Hostos was a philosopher, educator, sociologist, and writer who was one of the most prominent intellectual figures of nineteenth-century Latin America. He became an advocate for Puerto Rican self-government and established educational institutions across Latin America, reformed the educational systems of the Dominican Republic and Chile, and was one of the first systematic sociologists in Latin America.
