Juan Dalmau

Juan Dalmau Ramírez (born 1969) is a Puerto Rican attorney and politician who serves as president of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP). In the 2024 gubernatorial election, he received approximately 14% of the vote — the highest result for the PIP in decades, signaling a potential shift in Puerto Rican political consciousness.

A practicing attorney and former senator, Dalmau has modernized the PIP's messaging, focusing on corruption, fiscal justice, and quality of life alongside the traditional independence platform. His campaign attracted support beyond the traditional independence base, particularly among young voters disillusioned with the established parties.

Dalmau's 2024 result is historically significant: for decades, the independence vote had been suppressed below 5% by fear, stigma, and the carpetas legacy.
