Poet and revolutionary who wrote the original lyrics to La Borinqueña, Puerto Rico's anthem

Lola Rodríguez de Tió was Puerto Rico's premier nineteenth-century lyric poet, a feminist, and a revolutionary activist. In 1868, inspired by the Grito de Lares uprising, she wrote the patriotic lyrics to "La Borinqueña," which became a symbol of Puerto Rican identity and resistance. Twice banished from Puerto Rico by Spanish colonial governors, she lived in exile in Venezuela, New York, and Cuba, where she collaborated with José Martí. She is remembered for her famous verse declaring Cuba and Puerto Rico "two wings of the same bird."
