Lawyer, literary critic, and cultural advocate who defended the Spanish language and Puerto Rican identity

Nilita Vientós Gastón was a Puerto Rican lawyer, educator, writer, and cultural leader who became the first woman to work for the Puerto Rico Department of Justice. She successfully argued before the Puerto Rico Supreme Court in defense of the use of Spanish in the island's courts. In 1946 she became the first woman president of the Puerto Rican Athenaeum and founded the literary magazine "Asomante" in 1945.
