Bombing of Utuado and the Utuado Massacre (1950)

Utuado, a mountain town in central Puerto Rico, was one of the sites of the 1950 Nationalist Insurrection. What happened there after the fighting ended has become one of the most controversial episodes in Puerto Rican history.

The Uprising in Utuado: On October 30, 1950, Nationalists in Utuado, led by Heliodoro Díaz Pacheco and Damián Torres, attacked the local police station and post office as part of the island-wide insurrection. The National Guard was deployed with air support.

The Alleged Massacre: According to multiple accounts — including testimony gathered by historians and journalists — after the Nationalists surrendered, National Guard soldiers lined up several captured Nationalists against a wall near the Barrio Callejones sector and executed them. At least four Nationalists were reportedly killed after surrendering:
- Heliodoro Díaz Pacheco
- Damián Torres
- Antonio González
- Julio Colón Feliciano

Evidence and Controversy: The Utuado Massacre was not officially acknowledged by the Puerto Rican or U.S. government. Evidence includes:
- Testimony from surviving Nationalists and witnesses
- Forensic analysis suggesting execution-style wounds
- Discrepancies between official accounts and eyewitness testimony
- The account published in Nelson Denis's "War Against All Puerto Ricans" (2015)

The event remains officially unrecognized. The Puerto Rican government has not conducted a formal investigation. Like much of the 1950 insurrection, the events in Utuado were censored from contemporary media coverage.

The Utuado Massacre — if confirmed by a formal investigation — would represent an extrajudicial execution of prisoners by U.S.-commanded forces on U.S. territory, a war crime by any standard of international law.
