The Spanish Inquisition and Religious Control in Puerto Rico
The Spanish Inquisition extended its reach to Puerto Rico from 1519, enforcing religious orthodoxy, suppressing indigenous and African spiritual practices, and controlling intellectual life for nearly three centuries.
The Spanish Inquisition, established in Puerto Rico under the jurisdiction of the Tribunal of Cartagena de Indias, operated from 1519 until its abolition in 1813. While less intensive than in Spain itself, the Inquisition in Puerto Rico served as an instrument of colonial cultural control.
Functions:
- Enforcing Catholic orthodoxy and suppressing heresy
- Persecuting crypto-Jews (conversos) who had fled to the colonies
- Suppressing indigenous Taíno spiritual practices, including worship of cemís
- Suppressing African religious practices brought by enslaved people
- Censoring books and controlling intellectual life
- Investigating cases of bigamy, witchcraft, and blasphemy
Cultural Impact:
- Taíno religious practices were driven underground; some survived by syncretizing with Catholicism
- African spiritual traditions were similarly forced into syncretic forms, producing the blended practices that survive today
- The Inquisition reinforced racial and cultural hierarchies, positioning Spanish Catholic identity as the only legitimate cultural expression
- Intellectual life was constrained: Puerto Rico did not have a printing press until 1806, partly due to Inquisitorial censorship
Legacy: The Inquisition's cultural suppression set a pattern that would be repeated by subsequent colonial powers. The U.S. would later impose English-only education and suppress independence expression — different methods but the same colonial logic: the colonizer defines what culture, language, and thought are permissible.
The survival of Taíno and African spiritual practices, despite centuries of Inquisitorial suppression, testifies to the resilience of colonized peoples' cultural traditions.
